PRE-SURGICAL INFORMATION FOR GENERAL ANESTHESIA PROCEDURES

Your pet is about to undergo a procedure that will require general anesthesia. To ensure a safe and successful surgery, please follow the instructions listed below.

  • No food after 8:00pm the evening prior to the surgery date.
  • Water overnight is fine.
  • Arrive at the hospital between 7:30-8:30am the day of scheduled surgery.
  • Normal pick-up times are after 4:00pm the day of surgery.

Please allow a few minutes when you drop off your pet to fill out and sign an anesthetic release form. A pre-anesthetic blood panel is available to all pets and is A REQUIRMENT IN PETS OVER 8 YEARS OLD due to higher anesthetic risk. This test is to identify any problems with kidney or liver functions that, when combined with stress of surgery and use of anesthesia, would compromise your pet’s condition. Also Fluid therapy is available in order to help maintain proper hydration and blood pressure, and to have immediate access to a vein in case emergency medications are necessary. We recommend the placement of an intravenous catheter. THIS IS A REQUIREMENT FOR ALL MAJOR/ ORTHOPEDIC SURGERIES AND PETS OVER 8 YEARS OLD. If your pet has had any abnormalities with anesthetic recovery please advise our staff. (Note: Older pets may recover slower than usual and may not be completely back to normal for 2-3 days after anesthesia.)

All surgical procedures will require a scheduled appointment for pick-up so the doctor or technician may discuss with you results of the procedure or condition of your pet. The pick-up time will be discussed at time of drop-off.

We may request or recommend that your pet stay the night after surgery if entered for an extensive or complicated procedure.

After picking up your pet you will need to provide a clean, dry, warm and safe place for 2-3 days during recovery. If you are not able to provide this type of environment, arrangements may be made to keep your pet at the hospital for the needed length of time. There will, however be a charge for this service if more than one night of board is requested.
